The Best Shows to Watch for Proper LGBTQIA+ Rep.

IMDB Images – Adults on Hulu 2025

If you’ve ever found yourself watching a show and think, “Hey, that’s not accurate,” then you wouldn’t be alone.

So many times, queer characters are brushed aside, forgotten about, or doomed to never end up together. It’s a common trope, and it’s hard to find movies and TV that stray away from the stereotypes.

In our world that is full of misrepresentation, there are very few media that properly represent the gay experience and or the diverse lives of queer people. It may be shocking to some, but sometimes, having a queer character and treating them like a normal person is exactly the representation we need.

Now, if you’re sick of being tricked by queer-bait and are looking for shows to watch this year, with great representations and good plots to follow, then these are our top picks for you.

Where you can find them/Services mentioned: Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+

Preface: these are all opinions of the author and those questioned about the topic. If you disagree or have a show you hoped would be listed, then feel free to leave a comment to start a discussion (kindness is always preferred)

Abbott Elementary (Hulu)

With season five out now, it’s a great show that follows the lives of teachers teaching at a low-income school in Philadelphia, PA. Not only does this show feature a diverse cast and a plot that explores the intricate lives of teachers and their impact on students of all ages, but it also shows that a queer character is so much more than just the show’s “tokin gay”. With lovable characters like Janine Teagues, Gregory Eddie, Jacob Hill, Melissa Schemetti, and Barbra Howard, who will make you laugh every chance they get. The show about teachers that took all our hearts by storm is also inadvertently one of the best shows for queer representation, without being the main focus of the show. Exploring themes of friendship, the difficulties of negating life as a teacher, and the love we share for the things that make us uniquely different, this comedy will make you cry tears of joy. If you’re looking for a heartwarming sitcom and are a fan of shows like Modern Family and The Office, then this has to be added to your list ASAP.

Adults (Hulu)

This 2025 series, which has just been confirmed for a season two, was quickly dubbed the modern Friends for Gen Z. Taking place in New York City, we have a show following a young group of friends living in their friend’s childhood home right out of college, looking to find their places in the world. With progressive views, young adult mess-ups, and some of the funniest twists and turns for a one-season show, this is a must-watch for any 20-somethings who feel just as lost in their early years of navigating ‘adulthood’. With queer people of color, supportive allies, and fluid baddies, this coming-of-age series is what many feel older media was missing: a diverse group of friends in a real-life place, dealing with real-life shit, in real-life ways. With season two on the way, you’ve got to watch season one to see what you’ve been missing in your life until now.

Heartstopper (Netflix)

If you’re looking for something that fulfills the gay representation and makes your heart flutter, then this is the show for you. Heartstopper is based on a comic series written by Alice Oseman, following Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson’s love story. The comics and the show both focus on young teenagers trying to navigate first love, hardships, mental health, and a story that will simply keep you sat. With trans, nonbinary, asexual, queer, gay, lesbian, and so many more identities, this is definitely on our re-watch list for 2026. So, if you haven’t yet seen it, this is your sign to go and start a Netflix subscription right now! Before the final instalment, Heartstopper Forever the movie, comes out later this year!!

Overcompensating (Hulu)

Overcompensating is one of those shows that feels like a whirlwind while watching. Following Benny Skinner (written by Benito Skinner), the show touches on the struggles of coming from a small town with certain expectations, while also trying to figure out one’s queer identity. With great laughs and stressful fallouts, this show is one for the books. With the main plot following college friendships, you will also find great chemistry and a love for every character (mostly). This college show has all the stops and is a perfect watch for any young adult in or just out of college, who is trying to figure things out or is simply in need of a study break. So, if you’ve found yourself bored with nothing to do, or in a similar situation to Benny, then this is your sign to watch Overcompensating on Hulu as the next seasons come out.

Atypical (Netflix)

This show’s main focus isn’t on queer characters, but it is one of the best shows on this list. With representation for autism, this show follows the Gardner family as they live their daily lives. The main plot follows their son, who has been diagnosed with autism for most of his life, as he tries to expand his horizons (AKA he tells his family he wants to have sex for the first time). It all changes from there and becomes so much more than just wanting to have sex; it’s about finding oneself in a world that sees them as ‘different’. With confusing family changes, social norms, and queer awakenings, this show will make you cry happy and sad tears all at the same time. Not to mention, with the show coming to a close in 2021, there is no long wait to see how it ends!

YellowJackets (Paramount +)

If you’re not a fan of comedies, Yellowjackets is just the show for you. Labeled as a psychological-horror-thriller, this show is chock-full of queer representation that has risen the ranks as one of the internet’s favorite queer shows. About the story of a girls’ soccer team after a crash landing in the deep woods, you will be captivated by the gore and horrors they endure. Something we personally have had on our watch list for quite some time now, you bet we will be watching before the final season releases in late 2026. Whether it’s fan theories or canon lesbian couples, you won’t want to look away from this train wreck (or plane crash?).

School Spirits (Paramount+, Netflix)

This is another show that drifts away from comedy, as a supernatural drama series, it follows the lives of teenage ghosts that are stuck in the high school they passed in. It is quite the watch, and after just season one, you will fall in love with the tragic stories of these characters spanning different eras. With one ghost in particular from the 90’s giving us just the heartbreaking queer story you won’t want to stop watching. Not to mention, there are two new seasons on Paramount+ that we all have to catch up on to make sure everything turns out okay for our favorite school spirits.

Derry Girls (Netflix)

This is one of our highly recommended shows to start ASAP. Derry Girls is one of those shows that you will want to watch over and over again, from the coming-of-age story about five friends navigating life in Derry, Ireland, during the 1990s Troubles and political conflicts. From laughs to sobs, this show will have you wishing you could get some chips and go to an all-girls school in Northern Ireland. Following Erin Quinn, her cousin Orla, her friends Clare, Michelle, and James, through their unyielding loyalty to one another despite their differences. Give this show a try, and we bet you, you will be buying a rainbow pin to match these adorable besties before the day is done and dancing all night long to Dreams by The Cranberries.

TGA’s Honorary Historical Mention: Modern Family (Hulu)

As mentioned before, if you’re a fan of classic sitcoms and you haven’t seen this show, we don’t know what you’re doing with your life. Following Jay Pritchett and family, this show is all about spotlighting the diversity in family and the love people can feel for one another despite their differences. With people of color, age gap relationships, and queer couples, this show will warm your heart every step of the way. Especially once you get to the emotional episodes of Cam and Mitchell’s wedding in season five, following the legality of same sex marrige. As Jay learns to set aside his differences to walk his son down the aisle, you won’t be able to not love these stories. With plenty of seasons (eleven to be specific), you will have plenty of watching time to sit back and relax with a cup of tea when watching this chaotic family live their day-to-day lives.
